The Best Mattress for Summer: Your Duvet Tog Matters More Than You Think

As temperatures rise and the days become longer, many of us start thinking about ways to stay cool and comfortable at home. While lighter clothing and open windows may help, one area often overlooked is the bedroom.

A good night's sleep is essential for our health and wellbeing, but warmer summer nights can make it difficult to stay comfortable. Choosing the right mattress and pairing it with the correct duvet tog can make a significant difference to the quality of your sleep.

Why Summer Sleep Can Be Challenging

During the summer months, our bodies naturally struggle more to regulate temperature while we sleep. If your mattress traps too much heat or your bedding is too heavy, you may find yourself waking during the night feeling uncomfortable, restless and overheated.

The key to better summer sleep is creating a sleep environment that promotes airflow, regulates temperature and supports your body throughout the night.

What Makes a Mattress Suitable for Summer?

While there isn't necessarily a "summer mattress," certain mattress types perform better in warmer conditions.

Pocket Sprung Mattresses

Pocket sprung mattresses are often an excellent choice for summer because they allow air to circulate more freely throughout the mattress. The individual springs create natural airflow channels, helping to dissipate heat and keep the sleeping surface cooler.

Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses combine pocket springs with comfort layers, offering excellent support while maintaining airflow. Many modern hybrid designs are specifically engineered to improve temperature regulation compared to traditional foam mattresses.

Gel-Infused Memory Foam

If you enjoy the pressure-relieving benefits of memory foam, look for mattresses that incorporate cooling gel technology. These mattresses are designed to reduce heat retention while still providing the comfort and support memory foam is known for.

The Importance of Choosing the Right Duvet Tog

Even the best mattress can only do so much if you're sleeping under a duvet that's too warm.

The tog rating measures how effectively a duvet retains heat. The higher the tog, the warmer the duvet.

Recommended Tog Ratings

Summer (4.5 Tog)
A 4.5 tog duvet is generally considered ideal for warmer weather. It provides enough comfort without causing you to overheat during the night.

Spring & Autumn (7.5 – 10.5 Tog)
These medium-weight duvets offer flexibility during transitional seasons when temperatures can vary significantly.

Winter (13.5 Tog)
Designed to provide maximum warmth during the colder months.

Many people continue using their winter duvet throughout the year without realising how much it impacts their sleep quality during summer.

Other Tips for Staying Cool at Night

Choose Breathable Bedding

Natural materials such as cotton are excellent for summer because they allow moisture to evaporate and air to circulate more effectively than synthetic fabrics.

Keep Your Bedroom Ventilated

Opening windows during cooler parts of the day and using fans where necessary can help maintain a comfortable sleeping environment.

Replace an Old Mattress

An older mattress may have lost its ability to provide proper support and airflow. If your mattress is more than seven to ten years old, it may be time to consider an upgrade.
